Trinity Cert TESOL vs CELTA

This is the most asked question by people thinking about becoming English teachers. So, don’t worry if you’re confused. The simple answer is…. not a lot. Both qualifications aim to deliver the same thing – people who are ready to teach English to non-native speakers.

The difference is only in the small detail. Let’s look at the differences first before we consider the similarities.

Trinity Cert TESOL CELTA
Unknown Language 4 Hours (3 or 4 sessions) of you learning a language that you have not experienced before (usually not common languages like French or Spanish, as a lot of people have some limited knowledge of these. More likely to be something like Turkish, Urdu or Japanese)

You are required to write up a reflective journal of your experience which is internally assessed by your tutors & externally moderated by the Trinity examiner.

NOTE: Many trainees find the unknown language sessions to be the most enjoyable part of the whole course. This learning experience puts you in the shoes of a complete beginner. As you are being taught core TEFL teaching techniques in other session, you can also experience their effectiveness first-hand. This is a real eye-opening and beneficial experience and arguably makes you a better teacher for it.

Possibly only 45 minutes of an unknown language in a single input session. No assessment
Different Focus on English Lesson Materials Trinity courses are generally more ‘off-book’ than CELTA. There isn’t such a reliance on TEFL textbooks. This means that you are required to create lesson materials yourself.NOTE: There is nothing like creating your own lessons for understanding what works and what doesn’t for different groups of learners. This process makes you self-reliant and able to quickly produce relevant, engaging, up-to-the-minute lessons for your learners. Again this prepares you very well for the demands of English teaching. Sooner or later, you will have to create your own materials in your English teaching career. lessons Many CELTA providers often allow lesson materials to be based on adapting materials from existing TEFL textbooks.
Phonology Can be up to 5 hours of lesson input given to trainees. The SGI Cert TESOL course covers the Phonemic Chart, Connected Speech and Stress & Intonation. This may seem a lot, but yet again these aspects only improve your confidence in the classroom. Many English students are knowledgeable in these areas and you should be too. When a student inevitably asks you you a question about phonology, it is better to be prepared, rather than seeming clueless in front of a classful of students. CELTA providers can decide the amount of lesson input. Can be as little as 1 session.
